What are the advantages of using solar pumps for irrigation?
Ojvind KrabbeFounder AfricaPace
When there is no grid-based energy supply available, mostly solar pumps or
diesel-powered pumps are being used for irrigation. The environmental impact
of solar pumps is much lower than the diesel alternative, its emissions
being 10 to 50 times higher. Although the upfront investment costs for
diesel pumps are lower, their maintenance and operational costs are much
higher as they break down more easily. Generally, using solar pumps for
irrigation is hence profitable when financial systems for the repayment of
loans exist and where water needs to be pumped on a permanent and stable
basis.
