Where lie opportunities in supporting smallholder farmers?
Veronica Spaethlooking for new projects
Lacking agricultural policies have often left smallholders behind commercial farmers, although the former sometimes have vast land at their disposal.
However, this problem can turn into an opportunity when introducing simple improvements in farming techniques which can increase output by up to 50%.
Moreover, supporting the smallholders in gaining direct market access can prevent profits from being lost in a long trade chain. Here, technology is on the move in providing market information, such as sending market prices via trustworthy sources (e.g. technology by the Connected Farmer Alliance).
