The poverty rate in Kenya now stands at over 85%, and most of this population is in the rural areas comprising of women and youth. 80% - 90% of the majority who are flooding the job market find it difficult to find any white collar jobs hence forcing them to get frustrated and engage in crime and drug and substance abuse. The rural population of these cadre of people young and women luck sufficient ways of income and they live on a shoes lace budget leading them to migrate to the urban slums of Nairobi in search of casual employment. When they get to the city they find themselves in areas where crime and substance abuse is prevalent, and due to the problems facing them, they also engage in them. This can only be addressed by creating sustainable income generating activities in the rural areas through improved produce and value chains.
